  • Monmouth-Ocean, NJ (1888PressRelease) January 11, 2014 - It's that time of year again - get ready for Girl Scout cookies! From January 17th through the end of April, thousands of Girl Scouts throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties will sell these time-honored tasty treats during the Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Of course, we all know that Girl Scout cookies are delicious, but there's much more to the cookie than meets the eye.

The Girl Scout Cookie Sale is fun for girls and also helps them develop important life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. When you purchase a box of Thin Mints, you're not only helping our community, but also giving a Girl Scout the tools she needs to grow into the strong, determined woman she was born to be.

"Last year was my troop's first time selling cookies. By the end of the season they learned how to sell, how much to charge each customer, make change and to say thank you in writing," said Rachel Castellon, Brownie troop leader, Spring Lake Heights. "Their decision to sell towards a goal and ultimately achieve it was the best part of selling Girl Scout cookies. The girls felt empowered by the skills they learned through the sale."

In addition to teaching these valuable skills, the Girl Scout Cookie Sale also provides girls with multiple opportunities to raise funds towards goals they've set for themselves. Whether it is a trip overseas or a day at the spa, Girl Scouts achieve those dreams through determination and teamwork. Consequently, parents appreciate the program for both the life lessons taught to their daughters, as well as the goals and dreams girls can achieve that might otherwise be out of reach financially.

"During last year's cookie sale, my daughter's troop set a goal of 80 boxes per girl, but my daughter shot for the stars and sold 500 boxes!" said Rebekah Mann, Bayville. "She learned that anything is possible when you keep trying. Her goal this year is 750 boxes."

Equally as important, proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Sale also benefit other organizations within our community. Due to its overwhelming success, the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore is once again continuing its "Gift of Caring" program where Girl Scouts can donate boxes of cookies to worthwhile causes, including both the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and the United States military.
