  • (1888PressRelease) November 19, 2020 - Boca Raton, FL – Evan Hayes, a 10-year old from Clay County, Tenn., is battling leukemia and is in desperate need of a peripheral blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant to save his life. Amid a nationwide surge in coronavirus cases, he will need to stay in Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville to receive intense chemotherapy treatment and radiation as his family urges the public to help find a volunteer donor to save his life.

The fourth grader was initially diagnosed with leukemia in January 2017 and completed nearly four years of treatment. However, this September, his family learned that his cancer had returned and the disease has now spread from his bone marrow to his spinal fluid. Despite having two older siblings, along with loving parents and other family members willing to donate the necessary bone marrow, none of them are a match for him. In fact, 70 percent of patients in need of a marrow transplant do not have a matching donor in their family.

A sports fanatic who regularly roots for his favorite teams, including the Tennessee Volunteers, Indiana State Sycamores, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Braves and Golden State Warriors, Evan and his family are hoping for a miracle. “Evan has endured a lot in his young life,” said his aunt, Michelle Short. “Please help us save him by joining Gift of Life. This is the only chance he has to make his dream of growing up come true.”

Evan’s family is working with Gift of Life Marrow Registry, which has mounted an urgent campaign, calling on those who are 18 to 35 and in good health to join the registry as soon as possible. You may also support Evan by donating to his family’s fundraising “Donor Circle” campaign, which has a goal of $5,000. Every contribution helps Gift of Life add new donors to the registry and goes directly toward testing swab kits in order to find matches for Evan and patients like him.

“If you’re healthy and of the right age, please consider joining the registry to help save Evan or another patient battling blood cancer. Please consider a donation to offset the costs associated with testing,” said Gift of Life’s Director of Organizational Advancement, Marti Freund.
