  • (1888PressRelease) April 12, 2013 - Set in the Beautiful Countryside near the Peak District National Park Wortley Top Forge is situated in an idyllic location for a ghost hunt. What or who will we discover via the ouija boards, séances, and the use of latest electrical ghost hunting equipment at this Old Forge as we investigate the ghostly world of Wortley Top Forge, which has been inhabited for almost a millennium.

Records show that there may have been settlers as early as 1160 in the grounds of Wortley Top Forge and these would have been Cistercian Monks, after the Monks at Kirkstead Abbey had been given charters to dig ore, collect wood and erect four forges on the land. In 1379 -Wortley Records list four 'Smyths' and a 'Master'. This is to indicate that there was a bloomery in the area. The history of Wortley Top Forge was embroiled in the English Civil War, including a battle at Wortley Hall. Cannon Balls were later found at Low Forge however no record of whether these were produced at the Forge, or fired at the Forge.

One of the buildings at Top Forge includes as date stone for 1713. However, the current layout of the building dates from the 1850s when the forge was turned over to the production of shafts and axels mainly for use on railway wagons. Some of the earliest metallurgical experiments in the world were conducted at the site by the engineer and metallurgist Thomas Andrews. Railway axles of the highest quality were manufactured at the site in the nineteenth century and exported all over the world.

Footsteps have been heard from empty rooms and strange lights have been spotted in the Smithy too. We were also informed that many visitors to the Forge and volunteers who still work there are said to feel uneasy and as they are being watched by a cloaked figure in the dark shadows and recesses of the buildings.
