  • (1888PressRelease) October 24, 2015 - London : Research conducted by Healthcare Commerce Media Corp. predicts cold chain logistics spending will expand to more than $10 billion by 2018*. Regulatory requirements, increased use of biologic drugs, and the emerging markets penetration are the main drivers behind such huge investments in cold chain technologies.

SMi's 10th annual Cold Chain Distribution Conference and Exhibition, taking place in London, UK, on the 3rd and 4th of December 2015, will address Cold Chain Distribution within the Emerging Markets through a series of exclusive presentations delivered by industry experts from leading Pharma companies such as Genzyme and Novartis Pharma.

Chris Wallace, Distribution Director from Genzyme will feature on Day One of the event with 'Assessing the supply chain in emerging markets - focus on the Middle East and Russia'. Chris will share his experience on ambient products' logistics in extreme-temperature zones and describe some of the specific challenges in emerging markets and how to overcome them.

During an exclusive pre-conference interview with SMi, Chris Wallace commented: "The last mile of distribution of temperature controlled products is clearly very difficult to manage, in particular for emerging markets. For instance, some of our products can be irreparably damaged below 0⁰c or above 30⁰c - which could easily be compromised by the prevailing temperature range in parts of say Russia and Middle East respectively. As a firm believer of 'duty to patients', we are committed to implementing procedures adapted to the designated environments.

At Genzyme, supply chain and distribution is very much a cross-departmental, multi-functional subject, which we discuss and plan on both local and regional levels. We also take an integrated, centralised approach to facilitate our overall agility and flexibility. For example, we use a central database and associated management re to help manage temperature excursions when they do occur - should there be a temperature excursion in any country, we can respond very quickly to address the issue, and assess the implications for the rest of the world."

With a focus on cold chain and the emerging markets, 'THE INTERNATIONAL DEBATE: Cold Chain distribution strategy for emerging markets' will be presented by Hasan A. Jabarti, Quality Assurance Head, Novartis Pharma AG (Saudi Arabia). This will focus on assessing the emerging markets, the difference between cold chain in the Middle East and Europe and how to eliminate barriers to grow cold chain.

This year's agenda also features industry experts from the likes of Emirates French Hospital, Danish Technological Institute, NAPP Pharmaceuticals and SeerPharma (UK).

As well as supplying attendees with the latest updates regarding cold chain the 2015 event will provide an unrivalled networking platform. At the end of day one a drinks reception and dinner will take place for pharma companies and will be sponsored by World Courier. Then on day two a drinks reception will be held and is sponsored by American Airlines Cargo.
