Sir Robert Grant, Governor of Bombay in August 1834, had envisioned the idea of Indians being trained in European system of Medicine and to make this a reality Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy, the First Indian Knight & Baronet offered a magnanimous donation of One hundred thousand rupees. It was decided that with the aid of the generous contribution offered by Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy, the previously existing Native General Hospital in the city would be substituted by creating the Sir J.J. Hospital. Its foundation stone was laid on the 3rd of January 1843 and it was opened for reception of the sick from 15th May 1845. Since then, the hospital has played a vital role in treating patients not only from Mumbai but other parts of the country as well. This hospital has played a great role in management of victims of 1992 Bombay riots, Bomb blast 1994, Bhiwandi poisoning 1997 tragedies and 2002 Mumbai twin-bomb blasts.

Today, Sir J. J. Hospital alone has more than 6,00,000 patients coming for various medical facilities which is a testimony of the work the hospital undertakes.
