  • Lakeland-Winter Haven, FL (1888PressRelease) January 22, 2015 - Carved out of the central Florida wilderness, Auburndale was founded in 1884 when the South Florida Railroad selected the location to build a depot. Since then, the city has survived fires and other hardships. The city's history has been traced by local author, Beverly June Scott and has found its way as the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series. Auburndale boasts more than 200 vintage images, covering the city's history from 1882 - 1979. "The book is not only interesting read, but it will serve as an ongoing reference for information on historical events and dates," Scott said.

Surviving fires that destroyed Main Street twice, a tornado that demolished their schools, and winter freezes that killed citrus trees, Auburndale has become a thriving city. This history was taken and recorded by Alice Kaszer, who began recording a photographic history of the city in 1911. The author stated, "The images show the events that molded the formation of Auburndale, including the fires that completely destroyed downtown Auburndale."

"It is hoped that this book will blend the past with the present and forever be a memorial for the courageous families who followed the railroad tracks to a depot in the central Florida wilderness, leaving footprints in the warm sand for us to follow. The story of their journey will provide the reader with an insight into what life was like in a small southern town in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century's and be a reference for persons, dates, events, and locations," stated Scott.

    Highlights of Auburndale include:
    - Insight into early life in Auburndale
    - Images of Sanitaria, which was abandoned and later annexed into Auburndale
    - Early families that have descendants still living in the area today.
