  • (1888PressRelease) October 03, 2015 - First held in 1959, the Hong Kong Open is Hong Kong's oldest professional sporting event and one of its most important. Its impressive roll of honour includes Major Champions Rory McIlroy, Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman, Peter Thomson, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam and Jose Maria Olazabal. Recent winners include Ian Poulter, Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez and the current champion Scott Hend.

The 2015 tournament is scheduled for 22 to 25 October. The return this year of UBS as title sponsor for the first time since 2012 has seen the prize purse increase to US$2 million, from 2014's US$1.3 million.

The field for the 2015 UBS Hong Kong Open includes top golfers Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Victor Dubuisson, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Graeme McDowell.

Tournament organizers announced in September that there would be no admission charge to gain entry to the Hong Kong Golf Club on Thursday 22 October, meaning spectators can watch the first round action for free.

The 'Free Thursday' initiative is aimed at making the UBS Hong Kong Open more accessible to people from all walks of life and to help promote golf's popularity in the local community, and in doing so introduce the sport to new audiences.

"We hope to welcome record crowds in 2015, particularly as we will be showcasing several fun new initiatives including an enhanced UBS Hong Kong Open Spectator Village, where fans can enjoy lots of entertaining activities, many of which are family-orientated", said Kathryn Shih, Head of Wealth Management, Asia Pacific, UBS.

Free shuttle buses will also run throughout the tournament week for spectators to take to and from the Hong Kong Golf Club. They will operate between the club and ifc mall in Central (Hong Kong Island) and the Kowloon Tong and Sheung Shui MTR stations.

For those making their way to the UBS Hong Kong Open on the MTR, Sheung Shui station is the closest to the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling. From Sheung Shi station the free shuttle bus can be taken to the tournament, or alternatively it's a short ride by taxi.

The MTR's extensive network covers much of Hong Kong, and many of the hotels and student accommodation in Hong Kong including off-campus student housing is situated near or not too far from an MTR station.

A good number of hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) and Central (Hong Kong Island), for example, are within walking distance of the MTR, while Campus Hong Kong which offers student dorms and student apartments in Tsuen Wan Road in Tsuen Wan (New Territories) runs a free shuttle bus to and from two nearby stations.

Campus Hong Kong is a recent addition to the Hong Kong student housing scene, offering stylish and vibrant off-campus student housing in a picturesque setting on the Tsuen Wan coastline overlooking the South China Sea. This comes in the category of Bed - in a shared dormitory - and Room, which is a private room with four individual beds for four students.
