  • (1888PressRelease) February 13, 2013 - As part of an initiative to increase public awareness about Glaucoma, Advanced Eye is offering Free Glaucoma Consultations during this period at their Eye Hospital in Navi Mumbai at Sanpada, near Vashi station, Navi Mumbai.

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which there is damage to one's eyes usually due to increased eye pressure. Glaucoma is notorious as the "Silent Thief of Sight" because this is usually a painless, symptomless disease. Barring one particular type of Glaucoma, patients usually do not realise that their eyes are undergoing such severe damage. By the time they begin to experience loss of vision or blurriness, significant damage has already occurred.

Are you at Risk of Glaucoma?
    Above 40 years of age
    Are Near Sighted
    Have Raised Blood Pressure
    Suffer from Migraine
    Have Raised Blood Sugars
Have been taking medicines that contain steroids
Have had an injury to the eye in the past

Dr Susanta Chatterjee, Glaucoma Specialist at Navi Mumbai says, "Nothing can give us a better shot at treating Glaucoma than early detection. If you are experiencing reduction in your side vision, headaches, need to get your spectacles changed frequently, feel pain or pressure around your eyes or see coloured halos, you need to get your eyes checked for Glaucoma on an immediate basis. However, what is more important than that is if you do not suffer from any of these symptoms. Do get your eyes checked at least once a year even if you think you do not have Glaucoma".

Advancing technology has made it possible to detect Glaucoma in the early stages. One can detect and identify the damage by tests like Computerised Testing of one's field of vision, imaging of the optic nerve (the nerve that carries information from the eye to the brain), Gonioscopy (checking the eye's area of drainage which can get closed to cause Glaucoma), etc. Surgeries like Trabeculectomy, tube implants, non-penetrating glaucoma surgeries, and different lasers such as the YAG laser and Green laser help manage Glaucoma.

Dr Vandana Jain, Director of Advanced Eye hospital ,Vashi says, "Navi Mumbaikars are at an advantage now that they have access to state-of-the-art technology. However, not many people have heard of Glaucoma. Unless the population of Navi Mumbai is made aware of the existence and potential danger of blindness that Glaucoma can cause, how would they be able to protect themselves? This free camp is an attempt to spread awareness about the most common cause of irreversible blindness in the world."
