  • (1888PressRelease) July 03, 2013 - Saint Louis, Missouri - On June 11, 2013, Fred Sparks was recognized as a Professional Honoree in the Strategy & Research category for the Core77 Design Awards 2013 program. The Heartland Table project was designed for Icon modern's table collection. It is a multipurpose heirloom quality piece of furniture. It was designed with a modern aesthetic and with sustainable manufacturing processes at the heart of its essence. It's aptly named as its design, materials, and manufacturing all occurs in the Midwest, USA. Fred Sparks used their proprietary sustainable design strategies, to help their client find the most sustainable production options for their product offering. The process used revealed that reclaimed urban lumber had a 99 percent smaller carbon footprint at manufacture when compared to the same amount of standard-practice sourced lumber. Recognizing excellence in all areas of design enterprise, the Core77 Design Awards celebrates the richness of the design profession and its practitioners. In 2013, there are 17 categories of entry, providing designers, researchers and writers a unique opportunity to communicate the intent, rigor and passion behind their efforts. From client work to self-initiated projects, entrepreneurial to pro-bono engagements, the Core77 Design Awards embrace a wide diversity of enterprise: commercial, cultural, social, environmental and discursive.

As the jury explained in their comments, the Heartland Table was praised by Jesse McMillin stating, "I Love how a simple project (a table) can be approached with such thoughtfulness. It's a beautiful object that really considers the way it's made. Every component and object is deliberate. If only we approached every project with as much thoughtfulness, we'd live in a better world." This year's Strategy & Research jury team consisted of Susana Rodriguez De Tembleque Executive Creative Director at SYPartners, Phil Ginsberg General Manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, Kate Aronowitz Global Director of Design at Facebook and Jesse McMillin Creative Director at Virgin America. The Strategy & Research Category honors excellence in the fields of design projects that predominately utilized research or strategy in their product or project.

A truly global effort, the Awards program embraces a fresh and transparent judging process. A selection of international design leaders, based in various cities around the world, served as jury captains. Each of these individuals recruited judging partners to work with them on a particular design category. These teams judged simultaneously in different locations and time zones worldwide, and then participated in a live broadcast in their home city announcing the honorees.

The Core77 Design Awards announced their 2013 Winners, Runners-up and Notables during the week of June 10-17, 2013. This was their third annual program.
