  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) April 04, 2013 - Members of the Foundation for a Drug Free Florida will be distributing "Truth About Drugs" booklets throughout the area this coming weekend. The Foundation hopes to distribute 5,000 booklets, which will be available free of charge.

Booklet distributions such as these are a part of the Foundation's on-going campaign to educate the general public about what the harmful effects of drugs. The group will be distributing "The Truth About Drugs" which is an overview of 10 different drugs, including what each is made from and how it physiologically effects the body.

An example is the section on Oxycodone, a prescription drug that is as powerful as heroine and killed 1,247 people in Florida last year.

"At first it's okay to do - it's from a doctor, it's safe," said Crystal C., a young woman who had been addicted to painkillers such as Oxycodone. "It's definitely not worth it - it's only going to take you down. It's never going to take you up."

"The drug becomes addictive, causing withdrawal symptoms when discontinued. These symptoms include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes and involuntary leg movements" says the booklet.

Information about other drugs, including Ecstasy, crystal meth, heroine and LSD are included.

The printing of the booklets is sponsored by the Church of Scientology. The Church supports the Truth About Drugs program, one of the world's largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns.

This support began a little more than two decades ago, when Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard noted "Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs."

Working alongside other drug abuse prevention and education groups and law enforcement, the Church and its members have helped fund and disseminate educational materials - drug education booklets, a full length documentary entitled "The Truth About Drugs" and Public Service Announcements (the award-winning "They Said - They Lied" PSAs).

The Church of Scientology has published Scientology: How We Help-The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, a brochure to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports.
