  • Bergen-Passaic, NJ (1888PressRelease) July 09, 2014 - At 82 years old, Geraldine Thompson still has a zest for life. Since 2009, the former Ridgewood, N.J. resident has been strengthening her mind, body and spirit as a resident of The Atrium at The Allendale Community for Senior Living.

Thompson, a long-time volunteer at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, first discovered The Allendale Community as a member of its Senior Social Club. The popular adult day program provides ambulatory older adults with a safe, secure environment complemented by a range of enriching activities designed to foster peer companionship. Round-trip or one-way local transportation is available.

"I was having some back problems and my doctor suggested I stop driving. I have never been one to just sit around so when I read about The Allendale Community's Senior Social Club I was immediately interested. I loved everything about the program and the people, and eventually decided to become a full-time Atrium resident," said Thompson.

The Atrium's diverse array of programs encourages residents to rekindle their interest in former hobbies or pursue new interests. Residents enjoy arts and crafts; computer classes; low-impact exercise such as Tai Chi and Zumba; shuffleboard; horseshoes; day-trips and planned social outings; cooking demonstrations; films, lectures, concerts and discussion groups; and much more.

The residence has an arcade, a gym and a 24-hour movie theater. Other campus amenities include a library, a game room, a 1950s-style diner, miniature golf, a pub and lounge, a modern activities center with greenhouse, an Internet café and several well-manicured courtyards.

Thompson has fully immersed herself in The Allendale Community lifestyle, embracing each new experience and making many new friends along the way. "I like to stay active and there's always something to do here. Every day I exercise and enjoy playing word games with other residents. The Atrium hosts a full calendar of programs and events, and I usually attend everything that's happening. I especially love all the musical performances," she said. Away from The Allendale Community, Thompson relishes spending time with her son, daughter and two grandchildren.

Family owned and operated, The Allendale Community is located on 12 scenic acres in a quiet suburban neighborhood. The senior living and healthcare campus includes four full-service senior residences offering a continuum of care that serves residents' changing needs: The Atrium Assisted Living; Carlton Court, a memory care neighborhood; The Allendale Nursing Home; and The Rehabilitation Center at The Allendale Community.

In addition to the Senior Social Club, The Allendale Community also offers a Short-Term Stay Program. Originally designed to offer respite to caregivers traveling for business or a family vacation, the program has been expanded to include emergent stays during periods of severe or inclement weather. During a respite stay, seniors are given all the same amenities and care as permanent residents, including meals, medication management and access to a range of social activities.

The Allendale Community for Senior Living is located at 85 Harreton Road in Allendale (GPS: 65 Route 17 South, Ramsey). Developed in stages beginning in 1967, The Allendale Community pioneered modern-day eldercare. For more information, call (201) 825-0660 or visit http://www.allendalecommunity.com/.
