Former New York Jets Veteran Marty Lyons to Speak About Faith & Football on April 28 -Adelphi's Newman Club to Host Event

New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 26, 2011 - Marty Lyons, former New York Jets lineman, will be visiting Adelphi University on Thursday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the University's Performing Arts Center Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, to talk about his career and faith journey before, during, and after his time in the NFL. Mr. Lyons was part of what was known as the "New York Sack Exchange," which has also come to be known as the greatest defense in New York Jets history from 1979 to 1989. During his time as a New York Jet, he experienced a series of tragic events which significantly impacted his career, philanthropic desires, and faith; this included the passing of his father, and the untimely death of a little boy to whom Mr. Lyons had acted as a "Big Brother."

Mr. Lyons will talk about these events, how he kept his strong Catholic faith through the tragedies, and how he continues to live a religious life. Since his retirement from the New York Jets, Mr. Lyons founded the Marty Lyons Foundation, where he grants the wishes of children who are suffering from terminal illnesses. This event will be hosted by the Newman Club, the Catholic student organization on campus.

Mr. Lyons will begin the evening by sharing his story, which will then be followed by a Q&A session, as well as an opportunity for the audience to meet Mr. Lyons outside of the Concert Hall and have a personal conversation.

Mr. Lyons is a symbol of the goals and values that the Newman Club holds in high regard. The Newman Club hopes that the wider community will be able to look to Mr. Lyons and use his example as motivation and inspiration to make a difference in their own lives.

The Newman Club is a Catholic Campus Ministry organization for college youth. The first sector was established in 1893, and now is present at non-Catholic universities throughout the United States. Adelphi's Newman Club originated in 2006, and about 25 students belong to it. Primarily, the group allows students to freely worship their faith, and promotes unity, allowing students to live out their faith life.
