Forbes Living to Feature the Automat in an Upcoming Segment

  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) May 28, 2014 - The Forbes Living TV show has observed that, as a knee-jerk response to its employees protesting for higher wages, the fast food industry has threatened to automate large parts of their operations. What they fail to realize is that this has been tried before. They were called automats. Fresh food and prepared dishes such as sandwiches would be made in the kitchen and slipped into a wall of tiny compartments that separated the kitchen from the public area. Customers would never encounter the kitchen staff, but would insert coins in a slot in order to unlock the compartment that contained the item of their choice. It may have been impersonal, but many working consumers found them convenient and we are usually willing to make lots of sacrifices for convenience. The first automat opened in Philadelphia in 1902 and they became wildly popular until dying out in the 1970s. There are still some automats in operation in the US and around the world.
