Forbes Living to Examine How Sexism can Kill on an Upcoming Segment

  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) June 04, 2014 - The Forbes Living TV show has learned that in 2014, people still have a mental bias that women are less powerful or threatening than men. It has long been known that things like artwork, professional resumes and scientific papers are judged more valid when there is a male name attached than with a female name. Many female authors have published with a male pseudonym for that purpose. But is this still the case? Scientists wanted to figure out why hurricanes with a female name tend to claim more lives. What they found is that the people just aren't as intimidated by a hurricane bearing a female name than one with a male name, therefore they are less likely to take it seriously, evacuate or take appropriate precautions. The sexist prejudices of some people have actually killed them. In studies of hurricanes post 1979 (before which all hurricanes were given female names) a higher death toll was evident for the storms that bore female names. In a blind study, researchers quickly discovered the built-in bias of people regarding the different genders.
