Highlighting the growth and innovation of Saudi Arabia's plastic industry, the Kingdom Polymers & Plastic Summit opened on 8th December 2014 at Sofitel Al Khobar The Corniche, KSA. The summit commenced with a pre-conference workshop by Dr. Trevor Hutley, General Manager - Polymer Product & Technology Development from SIPCHEM on the new speciaility polyolefin copolymer (EVA) and its applications to the region. Dr. Trevor introduced the Sipchem polymer group, based at the polymer Product and Application Development Centre [PADC] in the Dhahran TechnoValley.

    Second day of the summit focuses on the downstream sector and the analysis of plastics and compounding industry. Opening with key notes by Omar Bahobail, President & CEO from Al Waha Petrochemical Company and Mohammed Al Hammdan, Director, Technical Marketing - PVC, PS & PET from Sabic. Mr. Bahobail provided the attendees with an overview of the market potential of polymer industry. They also proposed solutions by putting forward the best practises of Al Waha Petrochemical Company. Hamdan addressed the innovations and the growth in Kingdom's plastic industry.

    Shifting focus from the current development to new perspectives in the compounding industry, delegates heard from Dipl. Ing. Manfred Wiedmann, General Manager-Plastic Processors and Compounders, Coperion. Manfred's session focused on proprietary equipment and modular concepts that would increase flexibility and save time in the complete process chain. A technology panel discussion on innovations in technology and the latest trends for quality and cost effective plastic manufacturing. The discussion will be moderated by Dr Abdulrahman Al Ubaid from SADIG and led by Omar Bahobail, AL WAHA Petrochemical Company, Dipl. Ing. Manfred Wiedmann, Coperion, Mohammed Al Bahattab, KACST and Claude-André Tueller, Tooling Holland.

    Po­­st luncheon, the attendees will hear from industry experts representing organisations like Sem Plastik, Abu Safieh Group, SIPCHEM, Fabco Plastic Factory and Saudi Plastic Factory. Concluding the summit, the third day will concentrate on enhancing manufacturing process and bring forth advanced technologies. Major investment projects are currently being developed in the country through global Joint Ventures and setting up of parks, having the region poised to be the leader in the global plastic industry in the next few years.
