  • (1888PressRelease) February 01, 2015 - Parsippany, New Jersey - Eric J. Barr, CPA/ABV/CFF, CVA, CFE, Co-Managing Member, Fischer Barr & Wissinger LLC Fischer Barr & Wissinger LLC, recently presented "Valuing Pass-Through Entities: The Market Approach," on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the New Jersey Society of Certified Financial Planners (NJSCPA) Business Valuation Roundtable.

Pass-through entities (PTEs) comprise approximately 78% of all business entities, yet their valuation is one of the most discussed, controversial and least understood areas of business appraisal practice. Much attention has been focused on valuing PTEs, yet there remains a lack of clarity and consensus. In this presentation, Eric Barr focused on the Market Approach to valuing PTEs.

This roundtable catered to New Jersey CPAs who offer business valuation as a service, who want to learn how to accurately and effectively communicate and defend their PTE valuation opinions. The discussion covered a range of topics, including the history and impact of changing income tax rates on PTE after-tax returns; the normalization adjustments that need to be considered when applying the Guideline Public Company Method and the Guideline Transaction Method; and valuation perspectives assuming value to the holder/seller, value to the buyer/investor, and Fair Market Value.

Eric Barr has written a book, Valuing Pass-Through Entities which was published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Historically, the valuation community, the courts and the IRS have taken seemingly conflicting positions on the proper way to value pass-through entities. With his book, Barr provides a rich and deep history of pass-through entity taxation; compelling, rational and easy-to-use valuation models; checklists; case studies and more.
