  • Asheville, NC (1888PressRelease) December 02, 2012 - Celebrate Art, Culture and Chocolate at the first annual Asheville Chocolate and Arts festival on December 8, 2012 at the Asheville Civic Center from 12-7 PM. The event features FREE chocolate samples from over 12 local chocolate and dessert makers, including the French Broad Chocolate Lounge! This family friendly event includes multicultural performances for all ages by both local and international artists. Featuring Hip Hop dance with local troupe Eternity, Tango dancing, Cherokee Storytelling, Aztec Dance, African Dance, Tried Stone Baptiste Choir, Middle Eastern Dance and drumming with renowned percussionist River Guerguerian and dancer Lisa Zahiya, Zansa with Adama Dembele and Juan Holladay and the B-sides for children. Also there will be a live music dance fashion show with local models ages 7-70, featuring local designers and clothing stores. Also featured at the event: children's performances, face painting, stiltwalkers etc. There will be free workshops for all ages including drumming, bellydance, writing, and improvisational theater. Additionally, there will be arts and crafts for sale by local and international artisans.

    Another unique highlight of the event is the partnering with various non-profit organizations such as: Kids At Work! (Aspire Youth and Families), a therapeutic program that teaches underserved youth culinary skills. The Urban Arts Institute, a program that works with underserved by teaching them dance, photography and film. Odyssey Community school, an alternative school with a strong youth arts program and a unique learning environment. The Asheville Chocolate and Arts Festival will donate 20% of proceeds to these nonprofit organizations, but most importantly students from these programs will be actively engaged and working at the event and on all levels of production from performance to creating chocolate for sampling, to handling tickets.
