  • (1888PressRelease) June 28, 2011 - CHARLOTTE, NC - The McColl Center is pleased to present the Green Shadow, a solo exhibition of artworks and installations by Heather Lewis in tandem with a solo exhibition of work by Jeff Schmuki.

Lewis's work consists of light installations and non-traditional artworks, all described as drawings. The premise is that a stenciled image such as a shadow can be seen as a drawing according to certain traditional criteria : it translates three dimensional information into two dimensional format using value, edges and perspective. Within these parameters the artist demonstrates that the concepts of stenciling and design (staples of industrial production) bring new possibilities to drawing.

The 17 artworks in approximately 1100 sq ft of gallery space take the viewer through a series of proposals. A projected shadow taking up a whole wall is a drawing that occurs in real time, rather than being a record of past events. "Pay-per-view" is a drawing made by light reflecting from mirror tiles on the floor, and requires payment of twenty-five cents to experience fully. Gallery visitors slowly realize that a large shadow of a ladder has no light source but is painted on the wall.

Heather Lewis (b 1961, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago) was raised in the Caribbean next to a large oil refinery. Tropical sunlight and long shadows from the refinery flare at night laid the foundation for her current fascination with light and dark. Running a successful production pottery for 7 years in Scotland led her to a more abstract interest in industry and a return to study. Attending Duncan of Jordanstone College of Fine Art at the University of Dundee, Scotland, Lewis earned a BFA and an MFA, graduating in 2000. She has been living in the USA since 2002.

In 2010, Lewis's work was included in the group show Smoke + Mirrors/Shadows + Fog at the Hunter College/Times Square Gallery, New York. Also in 2010 she had an article published in Tracey, an online journal dedicated to drawing research at the University of Loughborough in the UK. Upcoming events for 2011 include work in the book "Hyperdrawing : Beyond the Lines of Contemporary Art" to be published by I B Tauris, and a project room at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey from October - December. Her work will be shown as part of the group exhibition "Waking up with Van Gogh" at the Hickory Museum of Art, NC in 2012.
