  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) December 22, 2021 - Experts from Con Edison, Aggreko Join Expert Panel to Discuss a Mobile Energy Storage future on ‘A Conversation with SMT’
Mohamed Kamaludeen, Project Manager of Energy Storage at Con Edison, and Sriram Sarma Emani, Vice President Operations at Aggreko Microgrid and Storage Solutions, joined SMT to highlight the future and opportunities of Mobile Energy Storage

On December 1, 2021, SMT held an expert panel conference call with Mohamed Kamaludeen, Project Manager of Energy Storage at Con Edison, and Sriram Sarma Emani, VP of Operations for Aggreko’s Microgrid and Storage Solutions, joined by SMT’s Head of the Alternative Energy Practice- Storage Technology, Jim Lim, covering the emerging opportunities and future potential of mobile energy storage solutions.

This moderated conversation focused on how the energy technologies driving battery systems are going mobile with portable and deployable energy storage systems. These mobile energy storage systems are increasingly seeing investment from stakeholders who want reliable backup power (such as military and government facilities) available at a moment’s notice without the issues diesel generators provide, as well as in response to storm or other emergency-driven power outages that leave communities vulnerable. As Sriram noted in the panel: “The need for mobile energy storage arises from the desire for energy to be rapidly deployable and modular, including being utilized for temporary and emergency power applications.”

These mobile energy storage deployments are still in their early stages, but there’s reason for excitement about the future, and lots of opportunity for stakeholders to get involved today. In particular, the utility view, as expressed by Mohamed, centers around the fact that “there are a lot of battery manufacturers around the stationary side, but appetite is increasing, and as electrification of vehicles and buildings gets public funding, the opportunity for energy storage to pair with vehicle-to-grid programs will greatly benefit the grid.”

This moderated panel session dove into the trends driving more attention and funding to mobile energy storage and provide insights into where this market is poised to go in the coming years. As Jim described, we may be in a supply chain shortage for batteries at the moment, but “keeping a positive outlook highlights that as you half the size of battery footprints, particularly in mobile energy storage solutions, you’re poised to double the market.”

    About the panelists
Mohamed brings over a decade of experience in the energy storage market, analyzing both the technologies available and the impact of integrating them into the grid. Working today as project manager of Energy Storage at Con Edison, Mohamed brings the utility perspective on the importance of mobile energy storage and the future of battery tech to widely transform the energy sector.

Sriram Sarma Emani has a proven track record in the field of Energy Storage Solutions and Renewable Energy Systems Integration, with a specialty in Microgrid Operations and Hybrid Power Plants. Working as the Vice President of Operations for Aggreko’s Microgrid and Storage Solutions, he’s been a key player in driving the mobile and emergency energy storage solutions to client types across the spectrum of a variety of applications.
Jim is working as the Head of the Alternative Energy Practice, Storage Technology at SMT, providing technical expertise in the alternative energy space, specifically on batteries, renewable energies, electric vehicles, grid energy storage, semiconductors, and materials science. He has 13+ years of experience in Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, Li-S batteries, and other energy storage across academia, industry, and government sectors.

    About the session
Conducted via a teleconference format, moderator Matt Chester noted that ‘by bringing together these leaders in the energy storage space, we can highlight for the industry some unprecedented insights for what the near-term priorities are and the long-term outlook for the technology.’ Martin Jacobs, Managing Director, Head of Research, added ‘The SMT model allows us to bring leaders in the alternative energy space together for unmatched access into the technical, market-based, and regulatory hurdles already being overcome by these companies. With these calls, we seek to help inform investors and industry onlookers in a more advanced, and insider viewpoint.’
