  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) July 30, 2010 - South Bay Ballet is pleased to announce that senior company member Evyn Nicole Davis is the 2010 recipient of the Daily Breeze "Making A Difference" award for her contributions to the excellence of Arts and Dance in the community. She joins the list of South Bay Ballet dancers honored with the award including: Steven Morse and Alexandria Mitchell the 2007 recipients; Charlotte Munson the 2008 recipient, and Elizabeth Simoens the 2009 recipient.

"Being recognized as this year's Making A Difference award winner is both a humbling and rewarding experience," comments Davis. "My hope is that, in some small way my experiences will inspire others to embrace a lifelong commitment and love of the performing arts. It is my involvement as a South Bay Ballet member that has afforded me some of my most treasured memories and friendships."

Born and raised in Torrance, Evyn, now 17, began dancing at the age of six at a local dance studio. Two years later, she began training at the Lauridsen Ballet Centre, the official school of South Bay Ballet, and was the youngest dancer to be promoted to the senior company at age 12. Evyn has been a featured soloist in many classical and contemporary roles including most recently The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker and Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty.

In 2008, Evyn was selected to apprentice with choreographer Kenneth Walker and continues to perform with Kenneth Walker Dance Project, a professional contemporary ballet company. Evyn's own emerging choreographic piece entitled "berceau" was selected to perform at Regional Dance America/Pacific Festival 2009 in Utah where she was also awarded a full scholarship to the RDA Choreography Conference. She has had the privilege of training at the prestigious Julliard Summer Dance Program in New York emphasizing choreography and modern technique. In addition to her ballet training, Evyn studies modern and jazz and has become an accomplished tap dancer with noted master teacher Adrienne Rudin.

As part of the teacher training program under Artistic Director Diane Lauridsen, Evyn has taught and choreographed for the Lauridsen Ballet Centre Summer Programs as well as staged ballets for South Bay Ballet. She is also part of the Mentoring Program with the company where she guides younger students and at times has up to seven mentees in a given year.

Evyn is an AP/Honors student and a three time Spartan Laurel Award Recipient at South High School. She balances her rigorous studies and a 25 hour per week minimum dance schedule along with her duties as Editor-in-Chief for the school newspaper, The Sword and Shield.

Evyn looks forward to studying Film and Media Arts either at Chapman University or Emerson College upon graduation. She plans to incorporate all that she has learned in the world of ballet and dance choreography and production in the hopes of working in the film industry as a creative producer both in scriptwriting and behind the scenes, most specifically in the musical genre.
