  • (1888PressRelease) December 23, 2017 - In late 2017, an amendment was published to EN 16121 – Non-domestic storage furniture – requirement for safety, strength durability and stability. EN 16121 is the standard reference for most non-domestic furniture on the European market.

The new version included one major change, which should be noted by stakeholders – laboratory furniture is no longer excluded from the product categories to which the standard did not apply. This means EN 16121+A1:2017 is now applicable to laboratory furniture.

The previous version of the standard had listed laboratory furniture alongside domestic furniture, office furniture, industrial furniture, retail furniture and industrial storage lockers, as products exempted from the standard.

It should be noted, however, EN 14727:2006 – Laboratory furniture — Storage units for laboratories — Requirements and test methods, has not yet been cancelled, although the cancellation process is underway. Stakeholders are advised to now refer to EN 16121.

Stakeholders should also be aware that office storage furniture may be included in a future amendment but at this time the requirements remain unchanged.
