Entrepreneur Clears His Name in 2007 Business Deal Gone Awry

  • (1888PressRelease) September 12, 2012 - TORONTO, Canada - In December 2007, Raphael Kojokaro was a sales professional working in vending machines and small franchises when his world came crashing down. With a couple of phone calls, Kojokaro went from a regular guy making a living to a man who would lose everything trying to clear his name. The charges were some of the most damaging a businessman can face - he was accused of scamming people out of thousands of dollars. His arrest made the news locally, and, worse, the news stories remain on the internet for all to see. The news stories don't include the most important detail in the whole ordeal: That, after an investigation, authorities involved with The Province Of Ontario vs Raphael Kojokarofound that there was no case against him. They were wrong.

How do such false charges happen? In Kojokaro's case, the high-risk business of entrepreneurship - starting a vending machine company- was in some cases taken on with expectations of easy money, something Kojokaro says he never promised. "If you work hard, these businesses can make money," he says. "It was always clear that you had to 'have what it takes.' Not everyone will succeed, the same as starting any other business."

Kojokaro went on to start a business of his own as the ordeal unfolded and he found himself unemployable. His company, a junk removal service called I Am Junk, did well against the odds, even securing a partnership with a major Toronto radio station to help keep the city clean during a protracted garbage strike.

Still, the accusations of his past continue to haunt him. "If my businesses had a run-of-the-mill customer service issue, people would call us scammers on the internet without allowing us to resolve the issue," he says. "I've had contractors try to extort me, using old articles they found on Google to make threats against me and my current business."

Today, Kojokaro is focusing his attention on his newest project, an upscale adult men's magazine. Never one to hide in shame, he decided to name itRaphael. He is currently raising funds for the project on Indiegogo.com.
