  • (1888PressRelease) August 21, 2011 - Exton, PA - The University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM), formerly known as Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine, has selected Education Management Solutions (EMS) to equip its new Clinical Skills Training and Evaluation Center (CSTEC) with medical simulation management technology.

KYCOM's new nine-story medical school facility is scheduled for completion in spring 2012. In addition to the Clinical Skills Training and Evaluation Center, the building will include two lecture halls, a gross anatomy lab, two research labs, offices, small group classrooms and student study space. Thefacilitywill house 12 specially-equipped examination rooms and serve as training and testing centers for the osteopathic medical students using standardized patients and high-fidelity robotic patient simulators. Students in the University's nursing program will also be able to utilize the space for similar training.

"The new educational facility and expanded clinical skills center will allow KYCOM to provide training and consistent, highly standardized, extensive testing of students. This technology will play an important role in our efforts to produce graduates who are well prepared and committed to serving the health care needs of communities in Eastern Kentucky and other Appalachian regions," said Peter Zajac, D.O., associate professor of Family Medicine and director of the KYCOM's Clinical Skills Training and Evaluation Program.
U.S. News & World Report recently ranked KYCOM fifth among medical schools producing the most primary care residents.

The EMS technology will assist KYCOM in streamlining the administration of clinical skills exams. With automated audio-visual recording, and measuring and reporting capabilities, faculty will have the ability to monitor a candidate's interaction with standardized patients (actors) and assess the student's command of modern medical equipment and standards of clinical practice.
