  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) March 18, 2011 - The National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) has selected Education Management Solutions (EMS) to equip its new National Center of Clinical Testing in Optometry (NCCTO) in Charlotte, NC with medical simulation technology. Fourth-year candidates from U.S. Schools and Colleges of Optometry, as well as a number of Canadian pre-graduates, will travel to NCCTO for the clinical skills portion of the three-part national board exam.

The NBEO's goal is to ensure that completion of all three parts of the national board exam assures competence at an entry level of optometric practice. According to Dr. Jack Terry, Executive Director of the NBEO, "The NCCTO will allow the NBEO to provide consistent, highly standardized, extensive testing of candidates as we strive to meet our mission of serving the public and the profession of optometry by developing, administering, scoring, and reporting results of valid examinations that assess competence."

The EMS technology will assist NBEO in streamlining the administration of clinical skills exams. With automated audio-visual recording and debriefing capabilities, the NBEO will have the ability to record a candidate's interaction with standardized patients (actors) in order for a panel of optometric examiners to assess the candidate's command of modern optometric equipment and practices. Other features of the EMS application that will enhance testing in the NCCTO are automated skills evaluation, scoring, and the ability to generate longitudinal reports.
