  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) February 01, 2012 - The e-Stewards Standard was developed by the Basel Action Network (BAN) in an effort to confront the growing e-waste crisis by prohibiting export of hazardous e-waste to developing countries and requiring best practices in environmental, health, safety and data security. eForce Compliance is the first electronics recycler in Philadelphia to achieve the certification.

Prior to e-Stewards certification, generators of obsolete electronic waste; consumers and businesses alike, had to either trust what their recycler was telling them about how materials were managed or attempt to self-audit. This proved to be extremely difficult. In order to achieve e-Stewards certification, recyclers are subject to multi-day audits by independent certifying bodies that are accredited to audit to the standard. All e-Stewards auditors must complete an extensive training program to ensure the quality of their audits.

"The e-Stewards initiative defines and promotes responsible electronics recycling and reuse worldwide by creating principled and practical standards that will among other things, prevent toxic materials from being deposited in solid waste landfills, sent to prison labor operations or exported to developing countries" said Jim Puckett, BAN Executive Director. "We are pleased that, as a Certified e-Stewards Recycler, eForce is now providing that assurance to businesses and other consumers of electronic products in the Philadelphia area"

The accredited third-party audited certification program is supported by the USEPA and is endorsed by Greenpeace USA, the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Electronics TakeBack Coalition and 68 other environmental organizations. It has also drawn the public support of major corporate "e-Stewards Enterprises" including Alcoa, LG Electronics, Bank of America, Capital One Financial Corp. and Wells Fargo.
