  • (1888PressRelease) December 05, 2019 - Canada’s CSA Group, formerly the Canadian Standards Association, has announced the effective dates from which only CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14 can be applied to intrinsically safe and associated equipment.

    The dates are:

    • September 1, 2019: all new intrinsically safe and associated equipment certification must be to CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14
    • September 1, 2020:
    o Product previously certified to the following standards can be evaluated within their scope until this date:
    1. CAN/CSA C22.2 No.157-92
    2. CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14
    3. CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:11
    4. CAN/CSA-E60079-11:02
    5. CAN/CSA-E79-11-95
    o After this date, evaluations to a revision must be conducted against CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14. Applications must be made before March 1, 2020 to guarantee the evaluation of the revision is completed by September 1, 2020
    • September 1, 2025: intrinsically safe and associated equipment can keep certified status if certification exists and there is no revision. The standards are:
    1. CAN/CSA C22.2 No.157-92 (or earlier editions)
    2. CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14
    3. CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:11
    4. CAN/CSA E60079- 11:02
    5. CAN/CSA E79-11-95

    Manufacturers are advised to apply for certification to CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14 by March 1, 2024, to ensure the evaluation is completed by September 1, 2025

    The CSA Group made the original announcement that effective September 1, 2019, CAN/CSA C22.2 No.157 – Intrinsically Safe and Non-Incendive Equipment or Use in Hazardous Locations – would be replaced by CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14 in June 2018.

    Stakeholders should be aware that from September 1, 2025, only CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60079-11:14 will be accepted.
