  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) June 18, 2020 - While Covid-19 has crept its way across the world, the humanitarian crisis of human rights abuses did not put itself on hold. To help bring solutions to this issue, United for Human Rights of Florida has re-opened its doors to its center at 29 N. Fort Harrison Ave., in downtown Clearwater.

The center is open weekdays 10am – 7pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 7pm. The center is closed for lunch between 1pm and 2pm.

“As evidenced by the recent tragedy of the death of George Floyd and the resultant riots and violence, something needs to change in how we as humanity approach others and approach life,” said Cristian Vargas, who directs the activities at the center.

“Most people do not know that they have basic human rights,” added Mr. Vargas. “The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, but it is up to us, as individuals, to see that these rights are made a reality.”

United for Human Rights and its Youth for Human Rights program are sponsored by Scientologists and in partnership with 1,000 like-minded groups in 80 countries, United for Human Rights has reached millions of teachers, parents, ministers, law enforcement and community leaders.

Components to the program include public service announcements, one for each of the 30 human rights, a documentary film on the history of human rights, an educator’s guide including a full teaching curriculum and booklets that highlight these 30 human rights.

“Human rights is not an abstraction,” said one participant. “It is a very real thing that happens every day that we have to defend and advance and deliver.”

“This campaign empowers individuals to use these rights to work within their community,” said another, “so they know what they can expect of other people and from their community.”

For those who would like to learn more about United for Human Rights, you are welcome to stop by the center during regular office hours or for more information and free on-line training on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, please go to www.humanrights.org.
