Editage presents interim results of its author survey at the 2017 CSE and SSP annual meetings
The annual meeting of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) was held between May 21 and 23 May in San Diego with the theme “Setting Sail: Navigating the Future of Science Publishing”.
- (1888PressRelease) July 18, 2017 - The 39th annual meeting of the Society for Scholarly Publication (SSP) was held between May 31 and June 3 in Boston. Over 1000 participants attended the SSP meeting and the theme this year was “Striking a Balance: Embracing Change While Preserving Tradition in Scholarly Communications.” Editage has been actively working towards bridging the gap between authors and journals through their industry-wide author survey that has received responses from over 5000 researchers so far. Editage’s team shared insights, based on their survey’s interim results, at both meetings. Both the CSE and SSP meetings were ideal platforms to present these results and inform journal editors and publishers about the author’s perspectives.
Donald Samulack, Head, U.S. Operations, Editage, expressed his appreciation for the response to the survey results by saying, “We analyzed the interim results of our in-depth survey and presented various insights to both journal editors and publishers during these meetings. To bridge the gap between authors and journals, it is important to identify differences in perspectives of authors and journals. The industry cannot evolve without support from authors. It was great to see that journals and publishers are actually listening to authors.”
The theme of both meetings focused on the future of the industry and the changes on the horizon. The keynote speech at the 2017 CSE meeting by Dr. Mary-Claire King addressed the importance of journal editors and shared some opinions of authors about journal editors, which resonated with the theme. The SSP meeting this year had two keynote addresses. Jeffrey Mervis, senior correspondent at Science Magazine discussed the Government, Science, and Science Policy. The second keynote address by Paula Stephan, Professor of Economics and Senior Associate, Policy Research Center, Georgia State University, discussed the challenges faced by early-career researchers and expected future trends in academia. Discussions at both the meetings elucidated that the scholarly communications industry understands the importance of addressing the needs of authors. Publishers and journal editors were keen to know author perspectives on the direction that the industry is taking. This resulted in the Editage’s survey results being among the most engaging sessions at both meetings.
