  • (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2011 - Dubai Knowledge Village, Dubai: The weekend of 7th and 8th October 2011, saw a gathering of 32 teachers and teaching assistants at the Holiday Inn Express in Dubai Internet City. They assembled for a two day, face-to-face introduction by course tutors, to the University of Nottingham (England) online Postgraduate Certificate in Education (International) for which they will be studying during the coming twelve months. University of Nottingham Tutor and PGCEi Dubai Coordinator Tony Fisher said: "It was wonderful to be working with such a large, diverse and responsive group, representing a variety of ages, backgrounds, cultures and nationalities. The enthusiasm and interaction in the group was excellent to see."

This is the third and largest cohort recruited by Stafford Associates in Dubai to date. Stafford Associates currently recruits for the PGCEi across the Middle East and Levant. For students whose geographical location, employment, family commitments or busy lifestyle does not allow them to attend regular on-campus classes, part-time or distance online, also called e-learning options courses, are an ideal solution. E-learning courses are suitable for a wide range of learning styles. Teaching is conducted through a mixture of audio-visual, written and interactive materials. There are also opportunities for online discussion and online interaction with tutors and other students.

The course, which has been developed by tutors at the University of Nottingham School of Education, is based on the academic programme from the long-established and highly-regarded PGCE, graded as 'outstanding' by the educational inspection agency Ofsted, offered to 'home' students at the University of Nottingham. However, unlike the original PGCE, the PGCEi is offered as a part-time, online course for practising teachers and teaching assistants outside the UK. The course, which is delivered through a secure virtual learning environment and takes advantage of the latest technological enhancements, operates as a programme of professional development and enrichment, enabling participants to make connections between their current classroom practice and aspects of educational research, theory and literature.

The overall aim of the PGCEi is for participants to become more knowledgeable and reflective as education professionals through the study and assessment of four course modules at Masters level. The PGCEi is focused on the improvement of classroom practice through critical reflection and action research.

The course has cohorts based in Bangkok (for SE Asia), Spain, Nigeria, Shanghai, Bangalore and - of course - Dubai, with around 250 current participants in total. In addition, the Government of St.Vincent and the Grenadines also put a cohort of its teachers through this online learning programme. To date over 200 participants have graduated with the PGCEi.
