  • Orlando, FL (1888PressRelease) July 22, 2017 - The Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (MAPS) takes pride in announcing that Dr. Susan Swedo will be the keynote speaker in their Plenary session on PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) in MAPS Fall Conference 2017. This year, the fall conference will be held at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Hotel for 3 days (from September 7 to September 9).

Dr. Swedo is the head of the behavioral pediatrics in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). She received her MD degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed her pediatrics residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Swedo started her career as a pediatrician in Evanston. Later, she joined NIMH and started her research on childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Dr. Swedo and her team in the NIMH identified a post-infectious subtype of OCD for the first time in the history of medical science. This post-infectious subtype is also known as PANDAS. This research has paved the path to a number of novel treatment and prevention strategies for OCD such as the use of immunomodulatory therapies (to treat ill children), antibiotic prophylaxis to anticipate the future neuropsychiatric exacerbations etc.
