  • (1888PressRelease) May 19, 2011 - Dr. Stephanides worked on a team that provided medical equipment (as well as installation and training) to the main public hospital in Jalalabad, making it the second public hospital in Afghanistan with the ability to do bedside monitoring of patients. The project was funded by donations to Assist with a grant from Rotary International.

Dr. Stephanides was part of a team consisting of 2 biomedical engineers, representatives from Assist and Rotary and one physician. They installed 14 bedside monitors and a central station distributed between the medical ICU, the PICU, the PACU and the Gyn ward. They also installed or provided an ultrasound machine, baby warmers, bilirubin lights, isolettes, stethoscopes for the medical students, EKG machines, defibrillators and procedure lights.

"My job on the team was to help with the install and to train the staff on how to use the equipment. I ran sessions for the docs and nurses on the different wards teaching them about patient monitoring and how to use the other equipment (which was interesting since a bunch of the doctors who had been practicing for years had never seen a pulse oximeter). They were diagnosing acute MI's by using a rhythm strip and changing the leads. Most of them had never seen bedside monitoring before."
