  • (1888PressRelease) March 26, 2011 - Dr. Hugh Berryman is a Professor of Sociology and Anthropology and Director of Forensic Institute for Research and Education (FIRE) at Middle Tennessee State University. He will be receiving the 2012 T. Dale Stewart Award for Lifetime Achievement by the American Academy for Forensic Sciences. This award is given annually to a single recipient and is the highest honor bestowed upon a forensic anthropologist in the United States. Dr. Berryman and student Alicja Kutyla won the Ellis R. Kerley Award in 2008 from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences for a research paper presented by them.

    In the interview, Dr. Berryman said that FIRE is about introducing forensic science to both students and faculty, and encouraging them to get involved. FIRE provides continuing education to law enforcement, medical examiners, coroners, attorneys, social workers, and other groups in forensic science and Homeland Security. FIRE fosters research collaboration and grant development among faculty members. He said that the department is completing one grant funded by Homeland Security and is involved in two other grants from the Department of Justice.

    To a question, Dr. Berryman said that MTSU offers a new undergraduate degree in Forensic Science. This is a demanding degree involving the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Criminal Justice.

    He said that Dr. T. Dale Stewart founded modern forensic anthropology and was certainly one of the most respected anthropologists in the history of our field. The Physical Anthropology section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences renamed the section award-our highest award-the T. Dale Stewart Award in 1987. He further said that he was surprised to hear his name called called for the award.
