  • (1888PressRelease) August 13, 2012 - Heather Mann will be presented with the inaugural Youth Compassion Award from His Holiness on Friday during his visit to Edinburgh in recognition of her altruism and charitable deeds. The award was open to anyone between the ages of 10 and 24 living in Edinburgh and those who made a positive difference to their community. A source for Direct Liaisons has said, "To receive such a prestigious award from the Dalai Lama Himself is definitely an honour that Ms Mann such be proud of."

The event will cap a remarkable month for the former St George's School for Girls student, who was also selected as an Olympic torch bearer last week. However, it is her commitment to good causes that has seen her catapulted into the spotlight and singled out for the Compassion Award. Mann began fundraising at just 12 years old when she netted £2,600 for schizophrenia charity by wearing pyjamas into Musselburgh town centre and the Capital. She soon became the Salvation Army's youngest member when she travelled to work at a poverty hit orphanage in Jamaica. "To hear of Ms Mann's desire to help others is definitely inspiring. It will be interesting to see what charitable deed she will perform next," said a source for Direct Liaisons.

Heather Mann has said she gets a lot of fulfilment from helping people and when you leave you know you have done something good. The teenager went to Jamaica last summer for five weeks at the end of July working at an orphanage run by the Salvation Army. Ms Mann has also said that leaving Jamaica had left her feeling sad but it had changed her life so much. Heather will now be spending a year volunteering at a children's home in Durban, South Africa, looking after 170 children. She is also considering training as a paramedic when she returns from her South African excursion. Direct Liaisons has said, "To know that Ms Mann is already planning to help more children in South Africa is something to be praised. We at Direct Liaisons would also like to congratulate Ms Mann on her well deserved award"
