  • (1888PressRelease) October 04, 2011 - Detroit, MI - Jim O'Brien, known as "Jim O." to his many radio fans will emcee a free public educational seminar on weight management, at Harper University Hospital on October 8, 2011. O'Brien, who began a weight loss program with DMC Harper Bariatric (Harper BMI) in early 2011, believes that people looking for ways to lose weight should find out as much as they can about their options. "Whether it's you or someone you love, you've got to do the research. The next thing to do is attend the seminar, because you can sit down and talk to people who have had the procedure and talk to the actual doctors, so you can visualize yourself going through this," O'Brien said.

The free seminar, presented by Harper BMI, will consist of education on weight management as well as Harper BMI's Comprehensive Michigan Bariatric Surgery Program. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the different surgical and non-surgical weight management options including lap band as well as another popular procedure in Michigan, gastric bypass surgery. Guests will also have their questions about laparoscopic procedures and other forms of weight loss surgery Michigan residents may be interested in answered by experts.

Board certified surgeon and medical director of bariatric surgery services for DMC Harper University Hospital, Michael M. Wood, M.D., will present important information on the latest surgical approaches to overcoming obesity and chronic diseases related to obesity including lap band surgery, Michigan residents' second most frequently performed bariatric procedure, where an adjustable band restricts the amount of food patients can ingest. Other speakers will include Dr. John Webber, Dr. David Edelman and Dr. Steven Hendrick.

O'Brien, who has been working with Dr. Wood for the past eight months, will also share his own experience with weight loss surgery, as well as discussing his interactions with the Harper BMI team. O'Brien sees the free weight loss seminar as a unique opportunity for people who are interested in weight loss to address their questions to real doctors. He said "How often do you get to actually sit down with a doctor and ask them direct questions? It's a very rare opportunity to have this kind of dialogue with a physician." For O'Brien, knowing all of his options was key to his weight loss success. "I talked to other doctors; I went to other places and I kept coming back to Harper BMI. I kept coming back to their expertise and plan. It was exactly what I was looking for," he shared.

Harper BMI's free weight loss seminar event will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at Harper University Hospital (3990 John R., Detroit) in Hospitality Suites 2 & 3, starting at 10:00 a.m. to Noon.

Seating is limited so register early. For more information or to register for this free seminar, please call 1-877-DMC-W8W8 (1-877-362-9898) or visit our website at www.harperbmi.org. Complimentary valet parking and refreshments will be provided.
