  • (1888PressRelease) July 01, 2020 - Denmark introduces carrier bag charges as part of an update to the provisions of its packaging law.

The new law, published as Order No. 766 of May 30, 2020, includes a completely new Chapter 3 §12, which covers carrier bag charges. Most of the rest of the provisions in the new Order remain largely unchanged from the previous, and now repealed, Order No. 1455 of December 7, 2015.

    These include:

    • No more than 100 ppm for the sum of lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium (VI) in packaging and packaging components. Leaded crystal glass packaging, as defined in Order No. 122 of March 6, 1973, is exempted

    • No more than 250 ppm for the sum of lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium (VI) in glass packaging. This is subject to these heavy metals not being intentionally added during the manufacturing process and conforming to certain quality requirements (Chapter 2, § 6 ‘Requirements for Glass Packaging’)

Order No. 766 of May 30, 2020 was published on June 3, 2020, and it has two effective dates for stakeholders to be aware of:

    • July 1, 2020 – Order No. 766 of May 30, 2020 on Certain Packaging Requirements except certain carrier bag requirements in Chapter 3 §12
    • January 1, 2021 – charging requirement for certain types of carrier bag, per Chapter 3 §12
