  • (1888PressRelease) February 06, 2012 - Utah Senator Peter Knudson and Utah Representative Kraig Powell are sponsoring a bill regarding petitions by candidates or political parties, known as SB 20. On Wednesday, Febuary 1st, the Utah House Government Operations Committee convened to discuss Senate Bill 20. Presidential candidate, Dean Morstad, was in attendance at the hearing and gave public comment on the proposed bill with respect to national Presidential candidates.

While planning for his Presidential campaign in Utah, Dean Morstad had been in contact with the Lieutenant Governor's office. He was gathering information regarding Utah requirements for independent Presidential candidates. During this time, SB 20 had passed the Utah Senate and was heading to the House of Representatives for vote. As passed by the Senate, the bill would require all petition circulators for independent candidates to be registered Utah voters.

Dean expressed concern to the Director of Elections over the wording of the bill, as it was exclusionary to national independent Presidential candidates. Representative Powell sponsored an amendment to the bill exempting Presidential petition circulators from Utah residency requirements. Dean gave public comment at the committee hearing in favor of Powell's amendment. The amendment was unanimously accepted by the committee for inclusion in the House version of the bill.

On Friday, February 3rd, Dean Morstad kicked off his Presidential campaign in Utah. He will be actively campaigning in the Salt Lake City and Provo areas through March 2nd. During this time he will also be gathering petition signatures to place his name on the Utah ballot in the November general election.
