  • (1888PressRelease) March 19, 2012 - British adventurer Dave Cornthwaite is setting off under sail on Thursday, March 15th to complete journey 5 of Expedition1000's planned 25 adventures all via non-motorized transport.

An ambitious project by even superhuman standards, Dave is on the path to raise $1.5 million for two charities; the AV Foundation and CoppaFeel in the course of completing his record setting journeys.

Unlike the last few of Dave's missions, the world record stand up paddleboard of the Mississippi River, and kayaking the length of Australia's Murray River, this sail will be a team event. Dave recruited ten strangers to join him, all via the power of social media, using his Expedition1000 Facebook page and his Twitter account.

Each of these crew members bring a special skill to the adventure, from the analysis of pollution in the water to video editing for the trip documentary.

Joining forces with Pangea Exploration's 72 foot sailboat the Sea Dragon, Dave will be able to use this experience as a test for a future mission: rowing solo across an ocean.

This journey is expected to take just over two weeks with the Sea Dragon and crew arriving in Hawaii around the 1st of April.

"The voyage, from Mexico to Hawaii, fits perfectly into my Expedition1000 plan. It's over 1000 miles (approx 3500, in fact) and doesn't involve a motor. And what's more, it would be a great opportunity to experience open water before a more arduous solo test in a rowboat."

This journey also hopes to be an educational forum, spreading not only the experiences of adventure but also the environmental issues the oceans are facing and the increasing responsibilities of the younger generation to get involved to make a difference.

In Dave's other journeys he has completed a world record skateboard across the length of Australia and tandem bicycled from Vancouver to Vegas. He was also the first person to skateboard the length of Britain and is the UK Aquaskipper champion. When he is not off adventuring, Dave is an two time author and gives motivational speeches to schools, events and corporations.
