  • (1888PressRelease) November 02, 2019 - Darryl Flukes, Captain of the Surrey Park Seahorses Masters Swim Club, achieved 6th place in the 200m Butterfly this year at the 2019 FINA World Masters Swimming Championships. With the help of swimming specialist John Sugden, he was able to overcome barriers and past difficulties to medal at the internationally recognised championship.

After a disappointing result at the Nationals Championship, Darryl sought out the help of John Sugden, professional swim coach of 20 years and owner of the John Sugden Swim School, to learn how he could continue to improve his swimming. “I enjoy challenging myself, setting and pursuing goals. But not being able to achieve them despite the effort I was putting in was incredibly frustrating” stated Darryl. Aiming for the FINA World Championships, where he would face athletes of all nationalities, required him to push harder than he thought he could.

John Sugden specialises in helping swimmers of all ages learn to swim to their strengths, working on making swimming ‘natural feeling’ for the swimmer. With John’s help and the support of the Surrey Park Seahorses, Darryl was able to refine his swimming technique and continue to perform at an international competitive level, despite his age. “My 50-year-old body just wasn’t going to continue taking the pounding I was giving it. A call to John sought to change that, and the results speak for themselves”

Darryl also competed in the 50m and 100m Butterfly, as well as the 200m and 400m Individual Medley. “Competing at the Masters was an incredible experience, and medalling there has been one of my long-time goals. Right now, I am relaxing and enjoying that, but new goals will emerge again no doubt.” Currently, Darryl’s granddaughter is being taught by John, following in her grandfather’s footsteps.
