  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 21, 2011 - On Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 4 PM - 8 PM, the Curly Girl Collective (CGC) will partner with select corporate affiliates and media entities to present Collective Expressions: A Celebration of Textured Beauty, an interactive one-day affair that will immerse guests in an artistic conglomerate of beauty, lifestyle, and natural hair.

Executed at the Brian Farrell's Art Studio at Chelsea Modern, Collective Expressions will be a convergence of information and experiences all centered on the burgeoning natural hair industry. Sponsored exclusively by natural hair conglomerate Miss Jessie's, media partner Heart & Soul Magazine and liquor sponsor Hpnotiq Harmonie -- this natural hair soiree will feature vendors, product swaps, hair consultations by cosmetology experts, professional manicures, raffles and giveaways, a live art installation, courtesy beauty makeovers and elegant signature cocktails. A special highlight of the day will be a live hair demonstration orchestrated by one of the sister owners of the famed Miss Jessie's Salon where a participant will receive a service commonly known as "the big chop," where a lucky winner who is making the transition from relaxed to natural hair will have her processed tresses cut off for an au naturel 'do.

Miko and Titi Branch, the sister owners of Miss Jessie's understand that events of this nature are key in mainstreaming the concept of natural hair. "First embrace yourselves then embrace your curls," says Miko. "Curly, kinky and wavy hair is beautiful. I am always intrigued when I see curls because it shows me texture, depth, personality and expression. I am not only describing the hair but also the person!" This sentiment is echoed by Julia Chance, Senior Beauty and Fashion editor of Heart & Soul Magazine, "There's never been a better time to discover the beauty of your hair's own texture," she says while also reflecting on the impact of pop culture and celebrities on how women and men have accepted the natural hair resurgence. An increasing number of celebrities, like Solange Knowles, Jill Scott and Chrisette Michelle are embracing their textured tresses and are taking the look to stylish new heights."

The event will also serve to benefit the needs and goals of its nonprofit charity partner, Petals-N-Belles. Founded in 2010, Petals-N-Belles works to inspire, empower and cultivate young women, especially those in need. Through an innovative, tangible curriculum, PNB addresses the various facets of life and highlights the importance of self-esteem, personal values, sisterhood, community service, cultural awareness and education. Through inclusion in all promotional efforts and various on-site integrations, CGC will work to increase awareness of this vital organization as well as raise money through proceeds generated through raffles and profits from the sale of the live art piece sold at the event.

As the natural hair movement continues to gain and sustain momentum and widespread acceptance throughout a wide range of communities, The Curly Girl Collective will continue to create innovative and creative events and platforms to serve as a catalyst for the natural hair conversation. The Collective Expressions soiree is the first of many fun yet informative experiences being coordinated and executed by this naturally coiffed collective.
