  • College Station-Bryan, TX (1888PressRelease) April 10, 2014 - James Edward Christiansen, who holds a BS and MS in Agricultural Education from the University of Arizona, followed by a PhD in Agricultural Education from Ohio State University, began teaching vocational agriculture at Gilbert High School in 1951 until becoming drafted into the US Army to serve during the Korean War. Leaving the military with the rank of sergeant, he then taught vocational agriculture, industrial arts, and biology in the Arizona High School systems of Tolleson, Snowflake, and Tempe from 1954-61.

In 1961, Dr. Christiansen accepted the position of co-administrator and project manager at the Resht Agricultural Teacher-Training School at Resht, Iran for the Near East Foundation, which had a contract with the government of Iran. After serving in that capacity until 1963, it was during these very influential years that he decided to earn his PhD.

At both the University of Florida from 1966-68 and at Texas A&M University from 1968 through today, Dr. Christiansen's responsibilities involved preparing undergraduate students to become high school teachers of agricultural science and in preparing graduate students to become more effective change agents and as professionals working in the area of international agricultural development and on projects and programs in the international arena. He has worked in 16 developing countries around the world and has visited 22 countries for professional purposes. He has also served as the major advisor to 23 doctoral students whose doctoral research involved specific aspects of international agricultural development, quite often in their home countries.

"My understanding of how to bring about the adoption and diffusion of appropriate technological innovations in different cultural situations and among different clienteles has been one of my greatest strengths," Mr. Christiansen said. "For example, while working in Iran, I learned the critical importance of analyzing and understanding thoroughly the various cultures and subcultures in which a change agent would be working in order to be successful."

Contributing his greatest accomplishments to the love and support of his wife of 63 years, Dr. Christiansen still goes into the office every day although he is technically retired as a professor emeritus because he wants to continue helping people become effective as teachers and change agents. He also serves as Senior Scientist for the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University. He always looks forward to helping people assess the situation in which they will be working or for which they are seeking information.

A current member of the Association for International Agricultural and Extension Education, American Association for Agricultural Education, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Zeta, Mr. Christiansen also coauthored a book titled, 'Exploring Agriculture', in 1984 through Prentice-Hall. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Bush Excellence Award for Faculty of International Teaching, an International Interdisciplinary Service Award, an International Excellence Award, and a Distinguished Teaching Award, all from Texas A&M University, as well as numerous other awards for service, education, and excellence from professional organizations.
