  • Houston, TX (1888PressRelease) October 26, 2013 - Elizabeth B. Thompson, who holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Family Studies, both from Louisiana State University, is certified in family life education through the state of Texas since 2000.

During Ms. Thompson's years as a hiring manager, she discovered that there were a number of job candidates that had a desire to work but lacked the academic skills necessary to navigate the reading demands of the job. By using her business management skills and family studies background, she decided to get into adult education in 1995.

Now managing the statewide data collection and accountability system for Texas adult education as an interim director, Ms. Thompson leads statewide professional development initiatives and oversees eight professional development centers that serve over 3,000 educators each year. Since the Texas legislature moved adult education from the Texas Education Agency to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), she is also now coaching TWC staff to lead the next generation of Texas adult education.

"My inspiration to serve in the state office of adult education was to elevate the quality of support to local programs, to provide local programs with electronic tools to manage their programs better, and to make the best possible use of taxpayer money to educate adults in Texas," Ms. Thompson said, who takes continued education courses and attains new certifications annually.

Now seeking opportunities to apply her unique blend of business and educational leadership skills in a regional or national leadership position, Ms. Thompson plans to continue to seek certifications that keep her current in today's marketplace.

Ms. Thompson is a member of the Commission on Adult Basic Education. She is the recipient of a 2008 Scott B. Himelstein Award, which was awarded to her by the National Even Start Association for outstanding national support to Even Start Family Literacy Programs. The award was a national peer recognition for leadership in adult education and family literacy.
