  • (1888PressRelease) July 10, 2010 - Corex Honeycomb, a divison of Encocam Ltd based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, has been awarded with the Certificate of Type Approval by Exova Warrington Fire on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the US Coastguard.

The Certificate, issued on 23rd June 2010, means that aluminium Corex Honeycomb is now fully tested and approved for use on board ships in both EU and US waters.

Exova Warrington Fire is an approved test laboratory for the MCA. As a notified body, they perform the factory inspections and quality audits to ensure that the product is manufactured the same each time it is produced. The system is based on ISO 9000 but particular attention is drawn to anything which may affect the product in relation to its fire performance. From the audits, they were able to issue Encocam with the QA certificate and using the test evidence provided by the Notified test laboratory, the certification body was also able to issue the Type Examination (TE) certificate. With both certificates, the notified certification body granted both the "Wheelmark" (EU waters) and US Coast Guard approval (for US waters) and this allows the product to be used on board ship.

Exova Warrington Fire made the following observation in the report summary: 'The FPC implemented at Encocam was very comprehensive and easy to follow with the 'works order' proving to be a very sensible reference for traceability of product manufacture and initial despatch. The FPC system itself is very detailed and relates to all key manufacturing processes. Adequate evidence was reviewed to confirm this process is well implemented.'

Corex Managing Director, Dr. Mike Ashmead, said " I am thrilled that Corex Honeycomb has achieved MCA certification. This reflects very well against our team who have worked extremely hard for this and highlights the high level of quality control which takes place throughout all stages of order production. The Fire Certification will allow us to enter new markets within the marine sector and we are looking forward to expanding our business in this area."

Corex Honeycomb will be exhibiting at Composites Europe in Essen on September 14-16th this year.
