  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) September 21, 2011 - COMMUNITIES FOR AUTISM, BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER and 101.1 WCBS FM in New York have teamed up to present The WCBS-FM Fall Concert Series which includes superstar performances by Rick Springfield, Cyndi Lauper with special guest Dr. John and The Doobie Brothers. This is the first campaign for New Jersey based Communities for Autism, a charity focused on helping to develop integrated residential services for adults with autism. The organization has special fund raising packages for each of these shows that includes an after concert event hosted by WCBS-FM at the theater.

After ten years of playing an important role in supporting the need for early intervention services for children with autism, Matt Ross, Founder of the highly successful "The Kids Foundation", has shifted his organization's efforts to focus on the growing needs for adults with autism. Ross has started a new organization called "Communities for Autism". "The cost to society is going to be extremely high if we don't provide quality, thoughtful, compassionate care for this growing population", said Ross who is also Chairman of the new organization. "Communities for Autism" believes the best housing solutions should be paired with community, recreation and vocational programs to provide the end-to-end quality of life that autistic adults deserve.

Nationwide, there are over 500,000 children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder who will enter adulthood over the next ten years. While every child diagnosed on the autism spectrum in America is guaranteed educational services until the age of 21, services diminish significantly for those over the age of 21. There is a drastic shortage in housing and services as demonstrated by the fact that most states have extremely long waiting lists for housing. In New Jersey alone the waiting list exceeds 8,000.

The mission of "Communities for Autism" is to identify the best programs and provide development grants to help increase the supply of housing and integrated resources for adults with autism. "I have watched the storm clouds brewing and there is a crisis on America's doorstep", said Ross. "I believe that this will be among the most compelling needs over the next 20 years for our country."
