  • (1888PressRelease) August 30, 2018 - Themed “Our Chinatown. Our Mid-Autumn” this year’s festival will recapture the scenes and life experiences of Singapore’s Chinatown in the 50’s and 60’s. It aims to encourage more people, especially the young, to learn about Chinese traditions and heritage, and the lives of their forefathers when they first arrived in Singapore.

Centrepieces depicting early Chinese immigrants, street lanterns in the form of traditional accordion paper lanterns, nightly stage shows, dragon dance performances on weekends, and the ever-popular lantern painting competition and mass lantern walk will allow Singaporeans and visitors to soak in the festive spirit. A new event “Reliving The Yesteryears Once More” features more than 10 popular Cantonese cuisines including two rare Cantonese dishes: “Gold Coin Chicken” and “Prawn Toast”.

This year’s street light-up focuses on the stories of the early Chinese immigrants in Chinatown and the various ways they have contributed to nation-building. The main centrepiece is a 10-metre tall Chinese junk ship, featuring 168 sculptured lanterns detailing the vocations of the early Chinese immigrants. Rickshaw riders will showcase along the divider between Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road. There will also be 180 beautifully hand-crafted lanterns, hand-painted with orchids, peonies and hydrangeas, that will decorate South Bridge Road. In addition, there will be 1288 larger lanterns decorating the main streets of Chinatown along New Bridge Road,
Eu Tong Sen Street and South Bridge Road.

Some other key highlights of this year’s festival include:
    • Setting a NEW record in the Singapore Book of Records for the most number of
Oriental masks worn at the same time!
    • Nightly Stage Shows, with Dragon Dance performance during the weekend
    • Lantern Painting Competition
    • Festive Street Bazaar, with over 200 street stalls
    • Mass Lantern Walk, with pit-stops to learn more about the Chinatown heritage
