  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 24, 2012 - The "sacredness of nature" is at the center of Claude Charlebois' photographs. Tree trunks, birds, butterflies and dramatically lit skies surround his human figures. Charlebois creates dreamlike images in which people who look as if they could have stepped directly out of a new reality are placed in environments that the photographer renders with striking clarity. An expert at in situ shootings, he renders his images as limited edition giclée prints that have an astonishing degree of definition. This gives the otherworldly atmosphere of those photographs a palpable physicality, resulting in images with a surrealist aura.

The artist is particularly good at giving light a life of its own. Whether it appears to be pouring between tree branches, animating the mist hanging in the air, or lending clouds a suggestion of physical force, light is always an active agent in these photographs, giving them a powerful sense of motion. The seductive images catch the viewer up in a world that is highly recognizable, but always maintains a sense of distance and mystery.
