  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) February 23, 2013 - Sandy Spackman, candidate for city council in San Diego's 4th district, announced that she and her team will attend the Buon Khao Chi Lao Buddhist temple event to register voters and educate the Lao community about the electoral process.

The Sunday event, hosted at Wat Lao Buddharam San Diego, is for Laotians of Buddhist faith to pay alms and worship. Families act as hosts on behalf of deceased relatives by inviting friends and family members to worship with them.

"Helping the Lao community become active in the political process is very important to me as a candidate for City Council," said Spackman. "We have been largely ignored by politicians over the years because we have been such a small voting block."

Besides the religious observances, there will be Lao music, a farmer's market, and the traditional roasting of sticky rice. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

"Personally, it is important to have every eligible member of the Lao community exercise his/her right to vote, so that our concerns will finally be heard. I am also anxious to have the Lao community work with other groups within the 4th district to improve our neighborhoods," said Spackman. "I hope that our effort to register Lao voters at this event will inspire the Lao community to become politically active and be prideful that one of their own members is running for City Council."
