  • (1888PressRelease) June 23, 2015 - Miami - The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design and the CINTAS Foundation have announced the ongoing 2015-2016 CINTAS Foundation Award in Architecture.

All submission materials must be received by Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

Marking its 51st year, the one-of-a-kind competition serves as a platform to promote and support visual artists, writers, architects and composers of Cuban descent from across the globe. Aside from a monetary prize, CINTAS fellows also carry the prestige that accompanies such an award.

"Architecture has been a cornerstone in Cuban history since its inception. Old Havana is on the UNESCO World Heritage list which cites „its overall sense of architectural, historical and environmental continuity…make it one of the most notable in the American continent as a whole?, It is only fitting that CINTAS Fellows in Architecture continue this legacy", said Hortensia Sampedro, President of CINTAS Foundation.

In addition to supporting Cuban architects, many early in their careers, the CINTAS Foundation also maintains a growing collection of works by past awardees and other esteemed Cuban artists.

    Past Architecture Fellows include:
Andrés Martín Duany was awarded the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum, the Brandeis Award for Architecture and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Medal of Architecture.

José Gelabert-Navia, whose recent work include the Village of Merrick Park Office and Residential Sectors in Coral Gables, the Delray Beach Public Library, the Caribbean Technology Center in San Juan, the University of Miami School of Communication, the St. Agatha Catholic Church in Miami and, with Charles Gwathmey, the Center for Contemporary Art in North Miami.

Marta Canavés and Marylis Nepomechie have earned grants from the Graham Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy and the American Institute of Architects. They also received a Design and Collaborative Practice Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

Jorge Hernández has been featured in Architectural Digest, Interiors, Florida Architecture, and Southern Accents.

MDC Museum of Art + Design will host a variety of events to showcase the works of this year?s finalists, including the Visual Arts Finalists exhibition. The awards announcement for Architecture will be made on Saturday, October 10, at MDC's Freedom Tower.

The winner will receive a $10,000 award and the opportunity to complete the project outlined in his or her proposal. While in recent years, the Fellowships in Architecture and Creative Writing have been awarded in alternating years, the competition will be opened in all four categories including Architecture, and will be announced by CINTAS Foundation Board President Hortensia E. Sampedro.

    About the CINTAS Fellowship Program
The CINTAS Fellowship Program encourages creative development in architecture, literature, music composition and the visual arts. The Foundation was established with funds from the estate of Oscar B. CINTAS (1887-1957), the former Cuban ambassador to the United States, a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts. In June of 2011, the CINTAS Foundation entered into an extended loan to MDC?s Museum of Art + Design of the CINTAS Fellows Collection, comprised of nearly 300 pieces by artists of Cuban descent living outside Cuba who have received prestigious CINTAS Fellowships, awarded since 1963. www.cintasfoundation.org
