  • (1888PressRelease) November 11, 2013 - With an event earlier this season hosted at the residence of the Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macao, the 2013 CIHL Canadian Consulate General Fundraising Event showcased the CIHL's efforts, while looking ahead at the league's - and the sport's - exciting future.

With league sponsor Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) back for a third straight season, the RBC Adopt a School program continues to flourish as students from across Hong Kong are gaining exposure to the sport and some, after watching the CIHL, take an interest in playing ball or ice hockey. Additionally, in its second year, the CIHL Intern Program provides an internship opportunity for talented hockey players in Canada and the US to gain international experience in Hong Kong, while playing in the CIHL and helping coach youth hockey. The U18 National Team partnership continues to offer opportunities for the next generation of Hong Kong hockey players to play elite, contact hockey on a regular basis.

Among those in attendance at the fundraising event were J. Ian Burchett, Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macao; Andrew Turczyniak, Head of Emerging Markets - Asia at RBC Wealth Management; Tom Mehrmann, CEO at Ocean Park; Arthur Lau, 2013 Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Ambassador; and Master of Ceremonies for the evening Andrew Work, CEO and publisher of Harbour Times.

Players from each of the RBC South China Sharks, AsiaXPAT Kowloon Warriors, Quam Hong Kong Tycoons and Galaxy Macau Aces were also in attendance.

Following cocktails, there was a live auction that featured a signed Gordie Howe Detroit Red Wings jersey and various hockey memorabilia autographed by NHL players. Other prizes included newly released technology devices, fine dining vouchers and an assortment of wine.

"The CIHL wishes to thank Mr. J Ian Burchett for his support and for hosting the 2013 CIHL Canadian Consulate General Fundraising Event, along with Fundraising Events for their auction support and ASC Fine Wines and Whistler Beer for providing the wine and beer for the evening," CIHL director and co-founder Greg Smyth said, "The CIHL has been incredibly fortunate to have so many supporters, from our league sponsor RBC, to the many partners we work with throughout the season and of course, CIHL fans. It is our hope that through this event we have been able to raise further awareness about the growth and development of the league, but also thank the many people who have been part of the CIHL."

With over 1,000 hockey players of all levels across Hong Kong, the demand for high-level hockey continues to grow and the CIHL is continuing to raise the bar in the SAR by providing a platform for talented juniors and the next generation of Hong Kong hockey players to develop.

While the on-ice action is not to be missed, the CIHL's initiatives off the ice are critical for the long-term growth of hockey in Hong Kong. From providing opportunities for students to experience hockey for the first time to working with the city's top junior talents, the CIHL is developing the sport from the grassroots up.

The 2013-2014 CIHL season runs through March 22, 2014, with all games taking place on Saturday nights at Mega Ice, 10/F MegaBox in Kowloon Bay. Every game night features a double header, with the first game beginning at 8:15 p.m. and the second at 9:30 p.m. The league will be back in action this Saturday, November 9 when the Aces take on the Tycoons at 8:15 pm, followed by the Sharks against the Warriors.

Season ticket packages are on sale now, with both fan packs and a four-person family pack available. Individual game night tickets are on sale for HK$150.
