  • (1888PressRelease) May 28, 2013 - Lahore: Thalassemia Day is observed worldwide on 8th May in order to spread awareness about Thalassemia and its effects on a human life. This year Chughtais Lahore Lab organized 'Thalassemia Day Event - Blood Donation and Transfusion Campaign' on 21st May in Central Park Medical College. This event included a seminar on Thalassemia and blood donation followed by blood transfusion to thalassemia patients.

Dr. Adil Akhtar (Member Medical Advisory Board of Thalassemia Federation of Pakistan) was invited by Chughtais Lahore Lab to talk about Thalassemia. Dr. Adil Akhtar addressed the students and the fellow doctors sharing his concerns and opinions about thalassemia and the steps taken to overcome this disease. Further, he discussed about "Thalassemia Today, Tomorrow and the Future".

Later Prof A.S. Chughtai (Dean) concluded the seminar with a thank you note to our guest speaker and the students who actively participated in organizing this event. A shield was also presented to Dr. Adil Akhtar to honor his visit to CPMC

As soon as the seminar concluded Dr. Adil Akhtar visited the Central Park Teaching Hospital and educated the volunteers about the basic symptoms and precautions for thalassemia patients. He graciously answered different queries among students regarding thalassemia.

In order to accomplish the difficult task of collecting blood donations and transfusing them at the same day, CLL hematologists planned and performed blood sample collections from blood donors as well as thalassemia patients before the event for proper screening and cross match. Once the donors were finalized, blood donations were collected before the seminar for further processing. When the thalassemia patients from Thalassemia Society arrived the venue, they were prepared for undergo blood transfusions. With great care and supervision of senior doctors, blood bags were transfused.

The core reason of conducting this event was not only to spread awareness about Thalassemia but also encourage people from different walks of life to step forward and donate blood as your blood can save a life. Therefore, be a blood donor; all it costs is a little love!
