  • Honolulu, HI (1888PressRelease) May 17, 2011 - Pai'ea Millwrights and Philip K. White & Associates are proving that dreams really do come true by creating a unique green keiki playhouse for the Hawaii Nature Center's Oahu Green Gala. A hands-on learning tool designed to show keiki how different sustainable strategies work at a scale that is accessible to them, the green playhouse will soon be on display at the Pacific Club.

The genesis of the playhouse was a shared desire of Philip K. White & Associates and Pai'ea Millwrights founder Logan Pai'ea White, who want to show keiki that reused materials can be made into something beautiful and functional. The 6' x 10' by 5' 8" playhouse is made of recycled redwood, cedar, fir and luan.

The two Honolulu-based companies joined together with builder/contractor Sunny Stevens to design and build the playhouse to demonstrate that used materials don't need to go to the dump - they can have a second life.

"To me, the playhouse is also a basic introduction to vernacular architecture for children," said Logan Pai'ea White, founder, Pai'ea Millwrights. "Hawai'i is a place where we have the option to build very lightly and still have some comforts. Refinement can always be added through emphasis on design, functionality and creativity. The playhouse is a model of these values."

Designed to provide shade and shelter, the playhouse roof sheds rainwater into a catchment container for watering nearby flowers and plants. Its resin panel window exhibit is also an innovative way to blend recycled content resins and natural reeds into a translucent panel.

At the playhouse, keiki can try their hand at growing veggies in the WikiGarden, which is a bio-sock containing organic soil on the Trex lanai. A small photovoltaic panel on the roof powers a bubble blower that resides on the lanai, showing keiki how the sun can provide the power needed for essentials of life, such as bubbles.

Keiki will have the chance to tour this amazing creation at the Pacific Club until May 20. Then, the playhouse will go up for auction at the Oahu Green Gala and will go home with one very lucky family.
